Japanese Surrender Tour

Delve into the war history of Wewak on this 2.5 hour tour around the region. Depart the wharf and head out of town to the top of Mission Hill. Mission Hill is a memorial to the brave soldiers that fought in World War II. Our next stop is the Japanese Gun mounts. The area of Wewak and a number of islands off the coast were occupied by the Japanese for some time during the war and heavy artillery was sheltered into the mountainside in case a defence of the area was needed at any point in time. We continue on to the west of Wewak, on another small point of land, where the Cape Wom Memorial Park can be found. Located on the site of an old missionary airstrip, no longer used, this park is dedicated to the surrender of the Imperial Japanese forces in the Wewak area by General Hutazo Adachi to Australian General H.C.H. Robertson. The surrender took place on Sept. 13, 1945, eleven days after Japan formally surrendered in Tokyo harbour on the battleship USS 'Missouri' to end World War 2. Its then time to relax and a few kilometres on is the secluded and gorgeous WOM beach. There will be time to enjoy a refreshment, wander along the beach, sit under the shade of a palm tree or even take a dip for those more adventurous (at own risk). A short drive back sees us back in Wewak and to your awaiting ship.
