MADANG & VILLAGE HALF DAY

Madang is home to majestic mountains, towering tropical rainforests, untouched coastal scenery, and some of Papua New Guinea’s most active volcanoes. There’s also a staggering 175 languages spoken in the area. Uncover all the magic of Madang on this half day tour. First stop is the Madang Visitors and Cultural Centre where you can discover a collection of art from Madang and surrounding Sepik River and Trobriand Island regions. You’ll see an intriguing range of weapons, shields, masks and more. Following the cultural centre, witness the local way of life with a visit to Bilbil Village, famous for their unique earth ware pots. Traditionally these pots were a highly valued trade item and today they are Madang’s most distinctive art product. Next up, stop at the Mildas Market, located on the outskirts of Madang Township. Wander through the stalls overflowing with tropical fruit and handicrafts including woven string bags (Bilums) and colourful baskets. Following the markets, enjoy breath-taking ocean views against the dark blue mountains of the Finisterre Range as you journey along Coronation Drive and stop for photos at the Coastwatchers monument. The 30-metre high monument honours the men who served behind enemy lines during WWII and provided vital information for the Allied forces’ operation. Your tour concludes with a mini cultural festival at the Madang Resort Hotel grounds. The festival includes a selection of different cultural groups from around Papua New Guinea. From here you can either return to the cruise ship on the tour bus or return to the ship on a shuttle bus service later in the day.
