The Lik Lik Festival

Celebrate the exotic culture of PNG with a visit to the Lik Lik Festival. Meet and greet elaborately dressed locals, shop for arts and crafts or dance to the beat of the kundo drums. Experience the excitement of the elaborately decorated Lopo war canoes. Transfer by local bus to Alotau’s bustling and lively festival grounds for Wanigili, which means ‘a gathering of people’ where Traditional groups come from afar to perform Melanesian dances and rituals. The sounds of the hourglass-shaped kundu drums, vibrant chanting and singing fills the air. You’ll be warmly welcomed and then you set your own pace. Here, you'll find activities including the elaborately decorated Lopo war canoes, bearing up to 25 warriors traditionally dressed and displaying their paddling prowess. See the skills involved in manoeuvring a canoe and learn the various rituals involved (subject to weather). For centuries, kundu drums and canoes have been meticulously crafted from special woods under strict customs to achieve the best results and, to appease the gods. They play an important role in local ceremonies and rituals. Take a stroll around the Festival, enjoy the explosion of colour, and marvel at contemporary and traditional Papua New Guinea culture and entertainment. Browse through arts and crafts stalls and shop for souvenirs, locally made gifts and artwork created by contemporary local artists.
