Santo Village & Fire Walking


After a short drive in your non air-conditioned mini bus you’ll take a short stroll through the verdant gardens, where your guide will explain the use of many of the plants, then enter the lush rainforest will take you picturesque Runsuc village. Young men performing a traditional Melanesian welcome will greet you. Witness the ancient art of sand drawing and the preparation of Pentecost custom mats. Take a Vanuatu-style cooking class as the village ladies demonstrate the secrets of making snake lap lap. Finally, you’ll be invited to take part in a ceremonial kava tasting and witness the rite of passage into manhood when the men of the village perform a fire walking ceremony.

Restroom facilities in the village may be rustic. To make your day as enjoyable as possible, please wear comfortable flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, a hat and SPF30+ or higher factor sunscreen. Make sure to bring bottled water. Please note kava is a non-alcoholic beverage used traditionally in the Pacific Islands for ceremonial purposes. Formed from the root of the pepper tree, kava usually has a mildly sedative and anaesthetic effect, although it is possible to have adverse reactions including upset stomach. The traditional method of preparing kava does not meet P&O Cruises’ standard of health and safety and any participation in trying kava is at the risk of the individual.
