Runsuc Customs & Firewalking

You could do a whole lot of nothing in laid-back Vanuatu but it’s fascinating cultural is sure to lure you off the beach. This tour will take you to a local village for a wide ranging cultural demonstration including ancient arts, tribal dances, traditional food preparation and the time-honoured customs of fire walking and kava tasting. Take a short bus ride to the quaint Runsuc Village where you will receive a traditional Melanesian welcome from the young men of the village. The warriors will perform traditional dance to the sound of tribal drums and share fascinating stories of their culture and history. Following a demonstration of the ancient art of sand drawing and the preparation of Pentecost custom mats, you will be treated to a Vanuatu-style ‘Master Chef’ cook off – it might not be a TV production, but you’ll enjoy all the same excitement and learn a cooking trick or two as the ladies of the village demonstrate the secrets of making the traditional dish of lap lap in an underground oven. Next you will be invited to take part in the time-honoured ceremony of kava tasting. And to complete your cultural experience, you’ll have the chance to witness a traditional fire walking ceremony, the ritual is a rite of passage for the young men of the village entering manhood. Special Notes: Restroom facilities in the village may be rustic. To ensure you thoroughly enjoy your adventure, please wear comfortable flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, bring a hat, plenty of sunscreen and bottled water.

Special Notes

Restroom facilities in the village may be rustic. To make your day as enjoyable as possible, please wear comfortable flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, a hat and SPF30+ or higher factor sunscreen. Make sure to bring bottled water. Please note kava is a non-alcoholic beverage used traditionally in the Pacific Islands for ceremonial purposes. Formed from the root of the pepper tree, kava usually has a mildly sedative and anaesthetic effect, although it is possible to have adverse reactions including upset stomach. The traditional method of preparing kava does not meet P&O Cruises’ standard of health and safety and any participation in trying kava is at the risk of the individual.
