Departing from the wharf you will travel to a traditional Melanesian Village located on the shores of the beautiful Erakor Lagoon. Here you will be welcomed into the main village where you can witness the time honoured tradition of Kava preparation, enjoy the unique tones of a local bottle band whilst a display tribal costume is paraded and witness traditional custom dances around the fire. All this as well as enjoying a smorgasbord of traditionally Vanuatu cuisine prepared in a ground oven. This is a unique cultural and cuisine experience for young and old.

Special Notes

This tour is only available on those cruises that are visiting Port Vila overnight. To make your day as enjoyable as possible, please ensure that you wear comfortable flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions including a jacket for those cooler nights and bottled water. Please note Kava is a non-alcoholic beverage used traditionally in the Pacific Islands for ceremonial purposes. Formed by the root of the pepper tree Kava usually has a mildly sedative and anaesthetic effect, although it is possible to have adverse reactions including upset stomach. The traditional method of preparing kava does not meet P&O Cruises standard of health and safety and any participation in trying kava is at the risk of the individual. Please bring local currency for additional purchases.

Discover the island of Efate, starting with a short walk through the lush rain forest to Iarofa Village to meet a traditional Melanesian warrior. Hear a local guide provide an informative commentary about the traditional customs and traditional village way of life. Witness the time-honoured art of fire walking and learn of the tradition, the sacrifices and preparation the men undertake prior to this ritual. Morning tea will be served here. Next stop is the refreshing natural swimming hole at Eden on the River. Then onto a white sandy beach, which allows for stretching your legs, taking a photo and a quick 15- to 20-minute refreshing swim. Journey on, passing more contemporary villages and catch glimpses of modern village life. Pass by the remnants of the American Armed Forces involvement in Vanuatu during World War II before arriving at a rustic local restaurant for a freshly packed lunch. Then, continue along picturesque Havana Harbour to the beach used during the filming of Survivor Vanuatu. On the way back to Port Vila, pass Klems Hill Lookout, which provides a superb view over Mele Bay, Hideaway Island and the township in the distance. Notes: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
