Historic Nuku'alofa

Get a fascinating insight into Nuku’alofa and Tonga’s intriguing history on this informative tour that will take you back in time. First stop is the Royal Palace, home of his late Majesty, King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV. The charming Victorian-era building was shipped from New Zealand and reassembled in Nuku’Alofa in 1867. Your tour continues to the Royal Tombs, where King George Tupou I and the rest of the late members of the Tongan Royal Family are at rest. Next, you’ll make your way to Captain James Cook’s landing place. A large monument marks the spot where Captain Cook first landed back in 1777. He dubbed Tonga the "Friendly Islands" because of the warm welcome he received from the locals. The final and fascinating stop on your tour is the centuries-old Ha’amonga Trilithon. Referred to by some as the Stone Henge of the Pacific Islands, it is a giant stone arch believed to have been built around 1200AD. Basic local buses are used for transportation, and they are not equipped with air-conditioning or PA systems. Restroom facilities may be rustic. To make your day as enjoyable as possible please wear comfortable flat soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, bring a hat, insect repellent, plenty of sunscreen and bottled water.
