Melanesian Mission Chapel Tour

It is perhaps surprising to have to find a church of such ornate and intricate beauty on a small island in the South Pacific. This magnificent church was built in 1880. The roof is designed like a keel of a ship. The tiles of the floor are marble quarried in Torquay England. The East windows are five beautiful panels given by the Dowager Viscountess Downe, depict the four evangelist Mathew, Mark, Luke and John with Christ in the centre. They are fine examples of the work of the famous Sir Edward Burne Jones, a craftsman of William Morris school. The Willis pipe organ installed in 1880 has 350 pipes, the organ is still in use today. The Pews are made from specially selected kauri are arranged in the style of English college chapels. The pearl shell decorations on the end are a work of art from a bygone era. The building, which has been used as a place of worship ever since 1880, has a fascinating history.
