Timaru Discovery Walk

Leave the wharf and walk directly on to Caroline Bay (voted in the top 10 best beaches) follow the memorial walkway, view display panels in honour of our war battles and heroes. Continue along the promenade and boardwalk toward the beach lookout, note the historical levels of the ocean at high tide. Take the cliff path to the Benvenue Cliffs enjoy the view of Caroline Bay and learn about Timaru’s worst shipwreck. Follow the path back through young New Zealand native tree planting across the grassed area past the bird aviary where you will see wind sculptures, summer carnival and whaling past. (toilet stop) Continue onto morning tea on the Bay hill and experience lovely views of the ocean and mountains at this elevated site while enjoying a packed morning tea. After morning tea walk down to the Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden a sensational collection of more than 1,000 of the world’s best roses architecturally designed by renowned architect Sir Miles Warren. The garden is at the foot of the Timaru Piazza, take the steps or elevator to the top again enjoying panoramic view. The walk continues along the street above they bay to the Landing Services Building, the last remaining of its type in the southern Hemisphere where we make our last stop, home to Te Ana Maori Rock Art, a guided interpretation of our local indigenous people. A high tech, high spec, visual, tactile and interactive Maori Culture tour. Conclude the tour with a short walk back to the Wharf and your ship.
