Waihi Gold Discovery Experience

Waihi has been famous for gold since 1878 and has a fascinating and unique story. Learn about some intriguing characters and events that have shaped the social and industrial landscapes over the past 140 years. Visit Waihi’s iconic Cornish Pumphouse and take an ‘inside the fence’ tour of the massive Martha Gold Mine. Normally off-limits to the public, exclusive access inside the mine security fence showcases modern-day gold mining. Next, travel back in time and enjoy a ride on the Goldfields Heritage Railway, an experience rich in history, including historic gold mining which shaped much of this part of the Southern Coromandel. Finally, the award-winning Gold Discovery Centre is a modern interactive facility where the Waihi story unfolds. Push hard against an air-leg drill that will shake your bones, just like a real drill. Lean on a plunger to trigger a simulated explosion down the gold mine, then for a change of pace, try to beat the shady dealer at a game of two-up. Special Notes: Please wear comfortable flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, a hat and jacket, plenty of biodegradable sunscreen and bring bottled water. Travel time to Waihi is approximately 1 hour each way.
