The Red Barn

Your tour starts on arrival at the Port of Tauranga. Along the way to The Red Barn you will be given an informative commentary about the Waikato region and the history of The Red Barn. The Red Barn was well known at the turn of the century for being a livery stable. Stagecoaches stopped at The Red Barn during long journeys to exchange their tired horses, then carried on with their voyage across the greater Waikato. The drive will take approximately one hour through beautiful countryside, where you will see paddocks full of sheep, horses, beef cattle and dairy cows. On arrival at Rock Spring Farm, you will meander through the picturesque farm for approximately 2kms to our traditional milking shed. There will be conveniences available both at the milking shed and at the Red Barn for your comfort. Our 500 acre farm milks 540 A2 dairy cows 10 months of the year, and we are very proud of the fact that we are a ‘Farm with Pride’ farm. Rock Spring Farm produces a special A2 milk, which is exported all over the world. A2 milk has been deemed to have many health benefits associated with it, and very popular overseas. During the tour you will learn about the journey of our milk and the end products produced for local and overseas markets. You will be provided with traditional ‘Red Band’ gumboots and disposable socks for you to change into before heading over to the ‘herringbone’ milking shed. This is an important health & safety aspect of the tour to avoid any contamination coming onto the farm. Our local farmer will entertain you and explain everything about the NZ Dairy industry from past to present day. You could even try your hand at milking our friendly ‘house’ cow, or hand feed an orphaned calf. Once the 45 minute farm tour is completed you will return to your coach and head over to the historical Red Barn a short distance away, where our friendly Kiwi staff will welcome you. You will be greeted with a refreshment and given a short talk about the interesting history of The Red Barn. Once you have freshened up, you will have the opportunity to make your own butter during our famous interactive ‘butter making’ experience and enjoy spreading it lavishly over our fresh locally baked breads. You will then be served a delicious two-course country style lunch with a beverage of your choice. After lunch spend some time walking around and relaxing in our park-like grounds and make sure you take some photos sitting on ‘Bertie’ our vintage tractor. There will even be time to do a little shopping before heading back to the ship. Come and enjoy a truly authentic kiwi dairy farm experience at The Red Barn.
