If you're interested in learning more about the Maori culture then this is one tour you will not want to miss. An authentic Maori experience, exclusive to Princess Cruises, this once-in-a-lifetime adventure starts with a motorcoach ride, across the beautiful countryside, with a brief restroom stop to pick up your Maori guide in Rotorua. The Tamaki Maori Village is the proud winner of New Zealand's Supreme Tourism Award and has become a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. Your experience begins before you step foot in the village as your guide talks you through what you are about to see, and explain some of the history and protocols of what will happen when you enter the sacred village. Expect lively singing, group games and horn honking as you wind your way along the country roads. You will then be greeted at the gates by a traditional welcome ceremony, before enjoying a colorful Maori performance accompanied by the sound of ancient Maori instruments. Observe life in this incredible village, which has been designed to offer the curious visitor a close-up and animated snapshot of the past. Then enjoy a delicious hangi feast, cooked in the hangi pit area. Traditionally, the hangi baskets, laden with piping hot chicken, lamb, kumara, potatoes, carrots, and delicious stuffing, are pulled from a pit. Your hosts deliver an interactive commentary on how the meal was prepared and cooked, the origin of the hangi and provide a brief history of how Maori hangis were cooked in ancient times. You may wish to purchase souvenirs before listening to a farewell song and speeches. Then board your motorcoach for the journey back to Mount Maunganui.
