Maori Culture Highlights
Soak up New Zealand’s rich heritage on a 30-minute scenic drive to a local Ngati Ranginui Maori Marae. Accompanied by a local guide, visit the Marae’s carved meeting house, Tamatekapua, named after the captain of the famous Te Arawa canoe, which arrived in New Zealand from Polynesia in 1350.
As you enter the Marae you’ll be warmly greeted by the tangata whenua (local people). Take a unique cultural journey through Maori heritage and early New Zealand life. View wonderful Maori arts and crafts, enjoy a colourful Maori folklore performance by local students and visit the gift shop.
Travel back to Tauranga via a scenic route along the magnificent Matapihi and Maungatapu peninsulas. Pass by the Maori War Canoe, Te Awanui, and the downtown waterfront.
