Napier City Drive & Aquarium
Learn why Napier was hailed the ‘Art Deco City’ on an hour long orientation city tour’. Napier was rebuilt in the early 1930s, following a major earthquake. The new buildings reflected the style of the times, Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission, Art Deco, and some incorporated unique Maori motifs. Your drive will discuss the city’s history and stories including the devastating 1931 earthquake as you follow the seashore along Marine Parade. Pass the sunken gardens, Aquarium, Spirit of Napier, and Art Deco buildings. Continue through Napier’s suburbs for views of the city and Hawkes Bay. Travel through the Marewa District, noted for its many Deco homes and superb gardens. Stop at the Aquarium and explore the display of aquatic life and unique wildlife including sharks, stingrays, living coral, kiwi, tuatara and a huge range of fish species. Return to ship via shuttle at your own leisure.
