See Napier on this hour long orientation city tour and learn how Napier became hailed as the “Art Deco City.” Napier was rebuilt in the early 1930s, following a major earthquake. The new buildings reflected the style of the times- Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission, Art Deco, and some incorporated unique Maori motifs. Board your bus and follow the Napier seashore along Marine Parade as your driver relates the city’s history and stories including the devastating 1931 quake. Pass the sunken gardens, Spirit of Napier, and Art Deco Buildings. Continue through Napier’s suburbs for views of the city and Hawkes Bay. Travel through the Marewa District, noted for its many Deco homes and its superb gardens. Your coach will drop you off at the National Aquarium where you can have as much time as you wish before catching a free shuttle back to Napier or to your ship. While at the aquarium, explore New Zealand’s largest display of aquatic life and unique New Zealand wildlife including sharks, stingrays, living coral, kiwi, tuatara, and a huge range of fish species.
