Gisborne Steam Train Adventure

Celebrate The Golden Age of rail travel on one of New Zealand’s last steam trains, the WA Class locomotive. A short walk from the pier, board a lovingly restored carriage for the 40-minute ride to Muriwai, a small town 25km south of Gisborne. Set off on a picturesque ride along the Poverty Bay coastline, pass the Captain Cook Statue, see the produce grown in this fertile area and views across to the ship, Young Nick’s Head and Muriwai. Built in 1897 in the Dunedin railway workshops, WA 165 arrived in Gisborne in 1911. It faithfully worked the north line until 1942, when it was retired to a children’s playground. In 1986, this beautiful train was rediscovered and fully restored by local railway enthusiasts. Today, settle into upholstered seats and toast to your good fortune with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine or fruit juice and sit back and enjoy the scenery and informative commentary. In Muriwai ,alight on the grass platform and enjoy a charming locally produced Maori cultural performance which often includes school children who bring a special sweetness to the ceremony.
