Taieri Gorge Railway - No Frills - Pukerangi

Transfer by coach to the magnificent stone Dunedin Railway Station and board the Taieri Gorge Railway for a four-hour round trip up the Taieri River Gorge to Pukerangi. This was the railroad to the Central Otago gold fields and the farming families of the isolated Maniototo region. The line passes through several little settlements, many of which were once thriving villages but now just have a station or one house. The conductor will provide some history of the region as you go. Travel through the city and suburbs to the Taieri Plain, which is famous for farming and horse breeding, and cut through the forest before reaching the famous Taieri River Gorge. The gorge is spanned by magnificent wrought iron viaducts and a railroad right of way that early pioneers carved by hand out of the rock. You’ll stop a few times to snap some photos, although you can make use of the viewing platforms on some carriages throughout the journey. Pukerangi is an isolated destination that will make you suspect you’ve entered a time warp. Enjoy the rustic surroundings as you see its off-the-beaten-track sights. The dramatic rocky scenery of the upper gorge adds a ‘wow’ factor, making this a rounded and worthwhile excursion. Returning to civilization and the fabulous Dunedin Railway Station, re-board the coach and head back to the port.
