Glow Worm Cave & Puketi Kauri Forest

The Kawiti glowworm Caves, located on private property, are owned by descendants of Maori chieftain Kawiti who fought against the British in 1846. See glow worm lights, impressive limestone walls and magnificent delicate stalactites and stalagmites that took thousands of years to form. A small stream flows through the cave. Visit quaint Kawakawa, known as ‘Train Town’ for the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway that runs down the middle of its main street, and celebrated for its public toilets designed by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, a former resident. The Puketi Forest once covered most of the Bay of Islands with massive kauri trees. Now protected in reserves, these magnificent trees rival California's redwoods in height and girth. Marvel at these imposing trees on guided walk on a boardwalk through the forest. Special Notes: This tour involves considerable walking. Guests must negotiate 150 steps at the Kawiti glow worm caves. No photography is allowed within the Kawaiti caves. This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties or claustrophobia. Please wear comfortable flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, a hat and jacket, plenty of biodegradable sunscreen and bring bottled water.
