Banks Peninsula & City Drive

Travel around Akaroa Harbour’s many bays and coves. The Banks Peninsula (named in honour of famed botanist, Sir Joseph Banks), was formed by three massive volcanic eruptions occurring millennia ago. The peninsula’s two main harbours, Akaroa and Lyttleton, are the exploded remains of shield volcanoes. Visit Manderley Farm, an historic homestead on the shores of Lake Forsyth. The farmhouse, built on a 750-acre working sheep farm, is renowned for its fine Merino sheep and champion sheepdogs. Explore the landscaped gardens of this fully restored 1876 historic homestead and watch a demonstration of herding skills featuring the farm’s prized collies. Next, pass Lake Forsyth and Lake Ellesmere (Waihora) and the township of Tai Tapu. In Christchurch, drive through the bustling Addington business district, past Hagley Park to the city centre. Explore some of the city’s attractions or shops. Travel through Tai Tapu and along the shores of Lakes Ellesmere and Forsyth back to Little River. Continue to Hilltop, a scenic overlook perched atop the rim of the caldera forming Akaroa Harbour. Special Notes: Please wear comfortable flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, a hat and jacket, plenty of biodegradable sunscreen and bring bottled water.
