Billabong Sanctuary & Scenic Sights

Departing the ship, start with a short panoramic tour of Townsville. You will pass The Strand, Castle Hill and the main shopping area of Flinders Street and enjoy a short photo stop at Castle Hill (time permitting). Drive past some of the well-preserved buildings of Colonial Period before leaving the town and into the countryside. Arriving at Billabong Sanctuary is when the fun really begins. The sanctuary is in 11 hectares (27 acres) of natural tropical North Queensland bush and home to all kinds of native mammals, birds and reptiles. On arrival you will be met by one of the sanctuary’s rangers, who will take you through some of the park where you can learn about the amazing animals of Australia. Perhaps choose to have your picture taken with a cuddly koala or hold a wombat (at your own expense). and, if you’re brave enough, there’s snake and crocodile handling too.Following your walk there is free time to stroll at your own pace and mingle with the macropods (kangaroos and wallabies to you and me!), take part in all the handling and feeding shows or simply relax by the pool before rejoining your coach for the return transfer to the ship.
