Naracoorte Caves

Journey to the intriguing Naracoorte Caves National Park, South Australia's only World Heritage site recognised as one the of the world’s important fossil sites preserving Australia's most complete fossil record for the past 500000 years. Board a motorcoach at the pier for the approximately 90 min journey through the country side to the National park. Upon arrival enjoy a guided tour into the Victoria Fossil Cave, the Fossil Chamber in the Victoria Fossil Cave is the most extensively studied. You'll also get the chance to analyse complete skeletons of megafauna species. Next, enjoy free time at the Wonambi Fossil centre, an interpretive centre showcasing how the caves have acted as pitfall traps, dens and roosts for more than 500,000 years. The Fossil Centre recreates a time when the local animal community was more diverse than today. Complete with fossil displays and a walk-through diorama with life-sized models of extinct animals in their ancient habitats this is sure to add extra intrigue to the visit. Lunch is not included in this tour; however you will have a small amount of free time to venture to the cafe to purchase lunch or additional snacks (additional expense) before the return to the pier.

Special Notes

Please note: The talk is suitable for all ages but does involve up to half an hour in the Fossil Chamber, so may not be suitable for some young energetic children. Please also take into consideration about 400 metres of this cave has a developed pathway and constructed stairs. There are about 50 steps into the cave and a steep sloping path out of it, but the walk is relatively easy. To make your day as enjoyable as possible, please ensure that you wear comfortable flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, a hat and jacket, and bring along some sunscreen and bottled water. Itinerary may be amended or cancelled in the event of extreme weather, heat or fire threat conditions.
