Port Arthur Historic Site

Visit World Heritage listed Port Arthur for a fascinating glimpse into history. Your tour begins from Hobart with a spectacular drive along the coastline towards the wild and scenic Tasman Peninsula, home to Australia's last penal settlement. Visit the Port Arthur historic site for a guided tour of the open-air ruins and restored buildings. Along the way you'll pass Eaglehawk Neck and see the quirky named homes of Doo Town. Port Arthur is home to the most intact and evocative historic prison in Australia. Covering 242 acres around picturesque Mason Cove the site has many ruined and restored buildings set in gardens and rolling lawns. Join your specialist guide for an informative walking tour. Step inside the eerie cells, wander through the Penitentiary, learn about convict discipline that ranged from physical punishment to psychological terror and hear tales of the hardships suffered by many during the harsh years of this penal settlement. A walk through the reconstructed Government Gardens (originally established in 1858), offers a glimpse of what life was like on the other side of the bars during this period. Following the walking tour, board the M.V. Marana for a harbour cruise that takes you past the island cemetery, Isle of the Dead and Point Puer Boys prison. Enjoy a light lunch during your visit before making the return trip to Hobart. Special Notes: The walking tour involves approximately 40 minutes of walking including stairs and ramp access to the ruins. Once at the ruins, walking is on even, grassy surfaces and uneven, unpaved ground. Some ruins have cobblestones, uneven flooring and steps, and narrow doorways that must be negotiated. To make your day as enjoyable as possible please wear comfortable, flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, bring a hat, plenty of sunscreen and bottled water.
