City and Anglesea Barracks


Discover the oldest Army base in Australia-the Anglesea Barracks. The Museum is located in the Military Gaol which was built in 1847. Displays interpret the colonial period when the British Army occupied the site and the various conflicts Tasmanian service men and women have been involved in from 1899 to the current operational deployments. Filled with a fascinating collection of military memorabilia and uniforms, you’ll have a guided tour and free time to discover Australia’s military past and present. Then enjoy a city drive taking in Mt. Nelson Signal Station and Lookout for a photo opportunity, Kingston, Taroona and Sandy bay plus the historic Battery Point and Salamanca.
