Fremantle Prison: Time in the Tunnels
Fremantle Prison--a UNESCO World Heritage Site--was built in the 1850s and sits atop a network of tunnels and passageways that form the astonishing labyrinth you will explore today. Put on a hard hat, slip into a pair of overalls, pull on some boots and switch on your headlamp. Then, you’ll lock into the ladder system and descend 65 feet into the depths below. Trek with your guide, on foot, as (s)he explains how the tunnels were built and what their purpose was.
Time to kick it up a notch? Just add water! When you reach the wet section, hop into a replica convict punt to explore the submerged passageways accessible only by boat.
You’ll discover original blast holes, bores, oil lamp recesses and artifacts from the days when working in the tunnels was hard labor punishment for prisoners.
This is an unforgettable experience combining adventure and a glimpse of Australia’s macabre penal history.
