The Legend of Old Tom - Eden's Killer Whale Trail

Take a trip back in time to when boats were made of wood and men were made of steel. Eden's Killer Whale Trail is a rail rich with whales and tales of adventure. Your tour today will take you to two of the most significant sights as you uncover the dramatic history of whaling from 1828-1930 and learn about the unique relationship between whalers and the wild killer whales (orcas). Begin with a visit to the Eden Killer Whale Museum where you will discover the legend of Old Tom. In the 1920s and '30s Twofold Bay and the area around Eden were home to a group of killer whales led by a large whale known to locals as Tom. Learn more about this fascinating story whilst enjoying the fine views of the bay from the gallery. Next it is on to the Seahorse Inn at Boydtown where the relationship between man and wild orca was first born on the white sands of Boydtown beach. The Thaua People performed rituals and dances to call and honer the killer whales their brothers or 'beowas'. Enjoy a morning tea here before returning to your ship at Eden.

Depart Eden and drive through Pambula and Merimbula to the Mimosa Rocks National Park. This 17 kilometer stretch of coastline will set the scene for a delightful morning tea before embarking on an easy walk. Head by foot to Penders and Bithryn Inlet, a fascinating site deeply embedded with local history. On the way, stopping at the Barn, Geodesic Dome and "The Bum Seat" for some brilliant photo opportunities. Arriving back at the coach, take a scenic drive along to the coastal village of Tathra, set against a backdrop of the white-sanded Tathra Beach. The town is dotted with small boutique shops and beautiful views around every corner.
