Marramaka Walkabout and Hope Vale Arts centre

Venture on a scenic bus ride from Cooktown to the Indigenous community of Hope Vale. You'll be accompanied by an Indigenous tour guide who will explore traditional mythological stories that explain and feature the landmarks as they pass. Arriving at the Hammett Household, learn about one of the world’s most ancient civilisations as you participate in a 2 hour walkabout through the rainforest trails and country of the ancestors (enclosed sturdy footwear is necessary). Your guide Gerry has a wealth of knowledge of the many species of plants and trees in our Rainforests and bushland, and will outline the traditional uses of the Indigenous ancestors on the land for food, healing and weaponary. Next, visit the Hope Vale Art Centre (“HVAC”) to appreciate a wide variety of Indigenous artworks. Enjoy free browsing the gallery including paintings, lino prints, etchings, artefacts, woven grass baskets and traditional bead jewellery. Finally, your tour will conclude with a final story during the ride back to Cooktown. A stop is included at the site of the original reconciliation between Captain Cook and the local Indigenous people, to allow you the opportunity to reflect on the intense cultural immersion that they have just experienced.
