Black Mountain and Lion's Den

Travel to Black Mountain (Kalkajaka) - an unusual and imposing black granite mountain. Black Mountain National Park consists of 781 hectares of protected land, and is home to an amazing imposing mountain of black granite. The mountain was formed by hot magma that slowly solidified under the earth’s crust, the softer more exposed surfaces eroded away over time to form the mass of granite boulders we see today – some the size of houses. Please take care when walking around this site as the ground may be uneven with gaps between boulders and rocks. Afterwards head to the Lions Den Hotel a rustic pub built in 1875 during the mining boom. Grab yourself a drink from the bar (guests own expense) and chat to the locals. Pass by a few of the local Cooktown monuments and sites on the return to the pier.
