Join us on a 2 -hour walk through “Our Town.” Cairns is a tropical city in North Queensland with a colourful background. Only 140 years old, the first Europeans came here in the rush for gold. Irish, English, French, Danish, Italian and the Chinese fortune hunters braved the crocodile infested waters, the dense rainforests, the heavy monsoonal rains, the biteys, the stingers and the heat, to build what is still the last city on the road going north from Sydney. All sorts of adventurers have followed including escape artists and alternative lifestyle seekers. Prior to that, and to this day, the Yirrganydji and the Yidinji Aboriginal people walked this land, Their history is part of our story. Nowadays, we are a chic tourism town with cafes and shops, and you can decide, as you walk with us through our town, if we are wild, weird, whimsical or simply wonderful. On the walk our guide will point out the historic buildings, natural sights and the special places that have created this tropical paradise. Our walk will end with a personal tour of the brand new Cairns Museum. In the Museum you can dig deeper into the tales of our city, get a grips with a tropical cyclone and discover how a thriving sugar town morphed into a tourism mecca. Or you can simply put your feet up and relax on this city’s best tropical verandah. The Museum will contain four permanent and one temporary gallery, showcasing displays and storylines created by a team of professional curators and designers, backed by local volunteers.
