Stanley & Northern Coast

Travel through the rural landscape and enjoy the country views of sheep, cattle and rich farmland that produces a multitude of vegetables, opium poppies and many other crops. Highfield – Founded in 1824, the Van Dieman’s Land Company was granted a charter to settle 250,000 acres of Northern Tasmania. In 1826, the company built Highfield as its headquarters. Despite developing Stanley as a harbour, difficulties forced the Company to sell its holdings, including Highfield, in 1858. Visit the main house, chapel, outbuildings, and stables as you learn about early colonial life of Tasmania. Next stop is Stanley; founded in 1826, and nestled at the foot of Circular Head – locals call it the Nut. After an orientation drive through the town, spend some free time exploring the historic township and wharf.
