Discover the highlights of Dili! Depart your ship and travel through the central business district of East Timor’s laid-back capital of Dili. Pass by many historical buildings, monuments & religious places including the Government Palace, Casa Europa which was the original Portuguese Military garrison built in 1769, as well as the Prince Henry the Navigator Monument. Your first stop is Timor Art & Craft Festival in Largo de Lecidere. A celebration of the country and its people's rich history and diverse cultures, offering an array of craft stalls from around Timor Leste throughout the day. Next, you will visit the famous Cristo Rei Statue, which was built in 1988 by the Suharto Regime as a gift to the Timorese People. The Impressive statue is 27metres to symbolize the 27 provinces of the Indonesian Republic, with the 27th province at the time being the province of Timor Leste. You will have the opportunity to climb the 597 stairs to the top of the mountain that are lined up by the 14 stations of the cross. Continue to the Santa Cruz Cemetery, one the most important and historically significant worship sites in East Timor. The cemetery is best known for being the site of the Santa Cruz Massacre that took the lives of approximately 250 youths on the 12th November 1991. Last stop will be at the Timorese Resistance Archive and Museum. Built in 2005, this museum is dedicated to the Timorese Resistance and aims to preserve and share the history of the 24 years struggle for Independence against the Indonesian occupation. Enjoy a 45min guided tour before returning back to ship. Refreshments include local cakes with coffee and tea.
