Discover the highlights of Dili! Depart your ship and travel through the central business district of East Timor’s laid-back capital of Dili. Pass by many historical buildings, monuments & religious places including the Government Palace, Casa Europa which was the original Portuguese Military garrison built in 1769, as well as the Prince Henry the Navigator Monument. Your first stop is Xanana Cultural Centre (originally the Xanana Reading Room) which is home to a public library, bookshop and exhibition spaces showcasing a permanent collection of photographs and paintings completed both during Xanana’s life. You will be treated to an exclusive cultural performance from le-ziaval who is a group that was established by Timorese students living in Indonesia during the late 1990’s who decided on an alternate form of protest, through dance and music. Next, travel south to Santa Cruz Cemetery one the most important and historically significant worship sites in East Timor. Be delighted with a delicious morning tea during your visit to the Australian World War 2 Memorial and Museum. On your way back into the centre of Dili you will have a chance to stop by the art and craft market where you can enjoy free time to browse locally made crafts and watch a Tais weaving demonstration.
