Tortola

The largest of the British Virgin Islands, Tortola is a true island getaway. It's main city, Road Town, is the capital and the center of activity with wonderful restaurants and stores. The official number of British Virgin Islands is "more than 40" of which 16 are inhabited. The tiny and almost forgotten islands are the sleepy relic of an empire, where English is the official language. The best known and largest islands are Tortola (where about 80% of the population lives) and Virgin Gorda. They are favored by yachtsmen, divers and nature lovers. Other islands in the group with few or no inhabitants include Anegada, Salt, Peter, Dead Chest, Great Dog and Norman (the "Treasure Island" after which R.L. Stevenson named his novel). The climate is sub-tropical with very little variation in temperature - 78 to 85 degrees year round.
