Recife was named after the coral reefs along its coast. Today the city is one of the main gateways to Brazil and South America and is a lively combination of old and new; wide boulevards and skyscrapers mix with narrow streets, ancient churches and bustling markets. Visit the neighbouring town of Olinda where cobblestone lanes wind up the hillside to the lighthouse.
