Rarotonga
Rarotonga, Cook Islands – port code RAR
The volcanic island of Rarotonga (rara-tonga) is the administrative center of the Cook Islands. The highest point is Te Manga, which at 2,139 feet rises majestically. The population is made up of descendants from voyagers from the Society Islands and the Marquesas. Explorer James Cook visited these islands between 1773 and 1779 and named them the Hervey Islands. However, the name was later changed to the Cook Islands. This island chain was a British protectorate in 1888 and was annexed to New Zealand in 1900. Today, the Cook Islands is self-governing in association with New Zealand.
