P&O Cruises Australia took immediate action
Date: 07 Jan 2008
P&O Cruises Australia immediately notified police of an alleged assault on the Pacific Star on the morning of 31 December as part of its stringent safety and security procedures.
The Pacific Star, which is based in New Zealand, was on an eight night South Pacific journey when a woman made an allegation against another passenger.
P&O Cruises Australia takes all allegations extremely seriously and followed established protocols for dealing with such situations, including:
- Immediately informing relevant authorities in New Caledonia, New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom.
- Securing the cabin where the alleged assault occurred.
- Preserving any possible evidence that police may require.
- Arranging support and assistance for any person involved in the alleged incident.
The matter is with police authorities. P&O Cruises Australia will fully cooperate with any police inquiries.
Over the past three years, P&O Cruises Australia has introduced many changes to its operations, especially in passenger service, safety and security.
Those changes, which accelerated after the start of the inquest into the tragic death of Mrs Brimble, were described by Counsel assisting the NSW Coroner as ‘a complete reform of the cruise industry insofar as P&O is concerned’.
Our responsibility is to create an environment onboard our ships where we do all we can to make sure people are safe, that behaviour is appropriate and our passengers enjoy their holiday.
In cases where people don’t behave appropriately, regardless of what we do to try to prevent such behaviour, P&O Cruise will respond immediately and properly in accordance with established protocols.
