P&O Cruises notify past passengers of a possible case of meningococcal disease

Date: 18 Oct 2007

P&O Cruises is contacting past passengers who travelled onboard Pacific Sun, which departed Sydney between 1-11 October, after NSW Health today advised a teenager may have developed meningococcal disease.

It is thought this is a single sporadic case with the source of infection unclear. It may have been contracted either onboard or after disembarkation.

Meningococcal meningitis is not easily spread from person-to-person and requires very close and prolonged face-to-face contact.

The teenage girl was treated quickly and is expected to make a full recovery.

“The health of our passengers and crew is important to us so as an utmost precaution we are contacting all past passengers on that cruise to ensure they are fully informed of the situation,” a spokesperson said.

“Where possible we are calling past passengers directly to make sure they receive the health information from NSW Health, which advises them to immediately contact a doctor should they develop any symptoms.”
