Nuku Hiva (nu-ku hee-va) is one of the Marquesas Islands and is located approximately 930 miles northwest of Tahiti (and only 4,051 miles from Los Angeles.) Twelve volcanic islands (6 are inhabited) make up the Marquesas archipelago. The islands are divided into the Northern group and the Southern group. Nuku Hiva is the largest island and is approximately 11.5 miles wide and 9 miles long. Nuku Hiva is the peak of an undersea volcano and is known for its rugged tropical beauty. The island has been inhabited for thousands of years and has many archeological sites. Fans of the popular television show "Survivor" will recognize Nuku Hiva as the site of Survivor's 2002 series.
