Huatulco

Idyllically set on the Pacific Coast, Huatulco (Wa-tul-co) is home to 18 miles of cove-studded coastline, forming nine beautiful bays. The dramatic contrast between the soft, white-sand beaches and the backdrop of jagged Sierra Madre del Sur peaks is truly breathtaking.

Site of important Ziapotec and Mixtec settlements until the arrival of Spanish conquerors, Huatulco was invaded by Sir Francis Drake in 1579, and English navigator-pilot Thomas Cavendish arrived eight years later in an effort to control this strategic port. Caribbean pirates used the area as a hideout before it became a sleepy little fishing village.
Today, the Mexican government, inspired by the success of Cancun, is developing Huatulco into a major tourist destination, with resort hotels and restaurants springing up along its sun-soaked shores. Popular with European tourists for years, Americans are just beginning to discover the delights of this beautiful pleasure spot.
