Hamburg

Hamburg is a major European port with an unusual degree of sophistication. It is situated on the Elbe river estuary and (like Venice) is built on piles over water, and has more bridges than Amsterdam and Venice combined. Of its 288 square-mile area, some 80% is covered by water, resulting in 60 dock basins and 40 miles of quays; it is one of the world's largest harbors. The climate offers sunny summers often lasting through October. Winters are generally cold. The language is German although many people speak English. Hamburg has long had a strong association with music. Classical composers Felix Mendelssohn and Johannes Brahms were both natives of Hamburg, and the legendary Beatles performed here in the early sixties. Today, Hamburg has several orchestras and a world renowned Opera house.
