Barbados

Passengers will enjoy the pink-tinged coral sand on the lovely beaches, the sugar cane fields, the quaint British influences and the many sport and sightseeing opportunities.
Pear shaped Barbados is the most easterly of the Caribbean islands. Only 21 miles by 14 miles, it boasts 60 miles of excellent white sand beaches. The dramatic, wind-swept east coast is washed by the Atlantic waves, while the tranquil Caribbean beaches of the west coast, edged with palms, offer swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. The first settlement was Jamestown (now Holetown) and was followed by Bridgetown, the island's present capital, on the south west coast of the island. Settlers brought tobacco, cotton and sugar cane. As the crops flourished, great plantations were established and the agricultural basis of the island's economy was in place. Despite devastating hurricanes and epidemics, the island developed into a thriving colony and was busy center of maritime trade during the 18th and 19th centuries, attracting many British immigrants. Independence came in 1966, and Barbados became a member of the United Nations in 1967. Barbados means "bearded men" in Portuguese.

While Barbados has inherited a number of British traditions – including cricket, soccer, lawn tennis, and even afternoon tea – it is very much its own nation. The Bajans (as the Barbadian people like to call themselves) are warm, helpful people who extend a cordial welcome to their visitors.
