Australians have had a longstanding connection to the sea. From the First Fleet to modern shipping, sea travel has been vital to our island home. Whilst pleasure cruising commenced in 1932, P&O Cruises was founded in 1837 and played a historic role in the Royal Mails, wartime assistance and the surge of immigration to Australia with the first P&O Cruises ship reaching Australia in 1852.

| P&O Cruises introduced Australians to the pleasure of cruising in 1932. In its inaugural voyage from Sydney to Norfolk Island the 23,000-ton P&O Cruises liner Strathaird sailed with 1,100 passengers. Travellers cruising during the last century enjoyed a variety of activities; concerts featuring ship musicians, dancing in ornate ballrooms, theatre and of course elegant dining each night. While male passengers traditionally retired for port and cigars after dinner in the Gentlemen’s Lounge, ladies promenaded the decks enjoying the fresh air and beautiful views. |

| P&O Cruises is proud to celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2007. Over the years, we have seen larger and more modern ships, however some important aspects remain the same. The spirit of adventure and excitement. The beauty of sky and sea. The spectacular destinations.
The Australian passion for cruising continues to grow. We have carried over 2 million passengers during our 75 years of cruising and our fleet has expanded to offer more options from Australia and New Zealand. In 2007 Australia’s first superliner, Pacific Dawn, will join the fleet. With three ships visiting destinations in the South Pacific, Queensland and Asia, cruising remains a marvellous way to explore our breathtaking part of the world. |
