More about Norfolk Island

Customs & Quarantine

Vegetables, fruit, flowers and seeds are prohibited imports to keep the island free of introduced pests and diseases.

Getting Around

There is no public transport on the island so our Shore Tours are the best way to see the sights. Or you can hire a car. Just look out for cows and chickens on the roads, they have right of way!

Shopping

The main shopping centre is at Burnt Pine. You can wander down one way and back the other. There are over 60 retail outlets where you can purchase a great range of products imported from all around the world.

Check out the market stalls at the Sports and Worker’s Club for locally made products such as plaited Island hats, handmade soaps, jewellery, artwork and woodwork made from famous Norfolk pine.

Dining & Drinking

Norfolk Island is famous for its food. Local chefs know how to make the most of seasonal local produce grown in the rich volcanic soils. There are over 30 restaurants. Don’t hesitate to try some coconut bread, pilhi (made from bananas), Tahitian fish salad or sweet dessert pies. Norfolk Island has a perfect climate for growing coffee and also produces it’s own chocolates, soft drinks, beer and liqueurs.

Climate

In a word: comfortable. One of Norfolk’s many blessings is a subtropical climate. The average temperature throughout the year ranges from 18 to 25 degrees Celsius.

Tipping

As a rule, tipping is not expected on Norfolk Island. However if you are happy with someone who has tried that little bit harder and gone the extra mile, then a tip is always appreciated.

Credit Cards & Banking

Major credit cards are widely accepted, as is Eftpos at most places. The Commonwealth Bank and Island Realty have an ATM and there is also a Westpac Bank. Banking hours are 9.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday.

Telephones International and Local

Public telephones are available in several locations in Burnt Pine. Norfolk Island does not have global roaming, however there is a local mobile service available. Pre-paid starter packs can be purchased from Norfolk Telecom or other outlets, all located on the main street in town. Please note that Norfolk SIM cards will only work in unlocked phones, which can be tested prior to purchase. There are public Internet facilities available also.

What To Wear Ashore

To make your day ashore as enjoyable as possible, wear comfortable, flat soled shoes, lightweight clothes and a hat and bring some water and sunscreen in summer and a rainproof jacket in winter.

Environment

We ask you not to take plastic bags ashore and to please bring your rubbish back on board to be disposed of thoughtfully. Eco friendly reusable P&O Cruises bags are available for purchase in the shops on board and from the Aqua Hut for a nominal charge.
