Nautical Glossary

Abaft
Toward the stern, relative to some object ("abaft the fore hatch").
Abandon ship!
An imperative to leave the vessel immediately, usually in the face of some imminent danger.
Daggerboard
A type of centerboard that is lifted vertically; often used in pairs.
Handy billy
A loose block and tackle with a hook or tail on each end, which can be used wherever it is needed. Usually made up of one single and one double block.
Hand bomber
A ship using coal-fired boilers shoveled in by hand.
Astern
Any distance behind a ship, as opposed to A-Head.
Gunnel
The large plank that runs along the upper part of a ship's side.
Shallow, not deep.
Shoal
Under the lee of the shore
Close to the shore, which lies to windward of the ship.
Fresh away
When your ship increases its velocity.
