Premium cruise line Princess Cruises is set to make a splash with the launch of its popular outdoor cinemas onboard its two Australian-based superliners.
Princess has announced it will introduce its "Movies Under the Stars" concept on Dawn Princess in June 2009, with her twin sister, Sun Princess, to get her own outdoor cinema during a refurbishment in April 2010.
The dramatic 28-square-metre LED movie screens have been a huge hit since they first debuted on Princess Cruises’ US-based ships in 2004, with passengers keen to watch latest release movies, concerts and sporting events by the pool throughout the day and evening.
"Movies Under the Stars has become a very popular part of the Princess entertainment experience in the US, and we’re delighted that the concept is being extended to our Australian-based ships," said Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which represents Princess Cruises in Australia.
"What better way to enjoy a movie than from the comfort of a deck chair, under our glorious southern skies?" Ms Sherry said.
Princess’ giant outdoor LED screen is supported by a 69,000-watt sound system, has sufficient lighting power to be seen clearly at midday and can be heard while the ship is moving at full speed – offering passengers a movie experience comparable to the best shoreside movie theatre. In the evening, the state-of-the-art screen offers a unique way to relax and enjoy current hit films outside on a comfortable poolside deckchair with special padded cushions and warm blankets.
Princess enhances the viewing experience with signature touches such as complimentary popcorn and a variety of movie-themed cocktails. Nearby eateries also offer a range of casual dining options to complete the ultimate poolside experience.
Australian travellers can experience Movies Under the Stars’ debut on Dawn Princess’ 13-night voyage to Fiji, New Caledonia and Vanuatu departing Sydney June 22, 2009, with fares from $2106 per person twin share.
Or travellers can enjoy open-air movies as they cross the Tasman on Dawn Princess’ cruise around New Zealand departing Sydney on November 3, 2009. Visiting six scenic New Zealand ports as well as Melbourne, the 13-night cruise is priced from $2295 per person twin share.
